Proof of my cocktail party mad skills -- TFW you make reference to the time @alanalda gave a talk with your "favorite mathematician" (@stevenstrogatz) ... to people who don't have a favorite mathematician of their own...
It's awfully hard to choose a favorite mathematician, though. If you want your epochal geniuses to be both doomed and lovable, then you've gotta go with Riemann. But if you prefer them just doomed, then Galois. If lovable, then Euler. Or maybe Lie, if you want 'em prickly, too.

I myself prefer Jules Henri Poincare, who, though moderately prickly, was neither doomed nor especially lovable. He's my favorite because I love his mathematics -- and because he so eloquently noted the crucial roles of intuition and aesthetic feeling in mathematical creation.
