I think it's pretty clear that Pascal spoke too early in the development of the physical sciences. In particular, he did not live to see Newton's system of the world. And perhaps he simply did not live long enough to gain the bitter experiences needed to doubt laws of morality.

Pascal was too pious to learn much from the Duc de La Rochefoucauld, but he should have paid more attention to the latter.
