Step 1: get really into a new musician you discover. Step 2: read about what they are often criticized for, and what their limitations are considered to be. Step 3: oh.
This never happens to me -- probably because all the new musicians I discover have devoted their whole lives to music, struggling fanatically toward artistic and technical perfection while constantly mindful of the astoundingly high standards set by their great predecessors.

That doesn't sound like a particularly nuanced argument, particularly since at least some of the people I was thinking of could pretty easily fit within such a definition.

No one can pretty easily fit within such a definition. I'm thinking of people who've spent tens of thousands of hours agonizing over the tiniest details of their every performance, because it's the only way not to fall embarrassingly far short of the minimum acceptable standard.
