Surprising discovery: when you talk to 9 year old boys about their career interests, you have to ask about their second choice, because most plan to become professional athletes.

I shouldn't have been surprised. When I was 9, I planned to play for the Steelers when I grew up. But I'd forgotten about that.

I never aspired to a career as a professional athlete. My parents and siblings took no interest in professional athletes, and those of my contemporaries who did struck me as loutish thugs. I wanted to be a Nobel laureate. Or a concert pianist. Or maybe both. Sigh.

Of course my social circle is extremely exotic, but most nine-year-old boys of my acquaintance are just as ignorant of professional athletes as I was at their age. What they want to do for a living is what they do best, which is thinking in a certain very peculiar way.
