Many of the older people I most admire are actively _not_ nostalgic for the past, even their own glorious pasts. Interesting balance: learning but not yearning for the past. Good to actively aspire toward.

For Shiing-Shen Chern, the past was ever-present: in everything that concerned him he saw the immediate relevance of the thinking and the dreams of Riemann, Lie, and Cartan, who throughout his long life remained for him inexhaustible sources of inspiration and encouragement.
