does it enrage anybody else that enough people have been incorrectly using the word "presently" to mean "currently" that it has now become an acceptable alternate definition in the dictionary?

I mean, I'm no diehard prescriptivist (just a dabbler), but why should the rest of us now have to deal with increased ambiguity in the language simply because a few of you were too goddamn apathetic to look that word up in the dictionary before employing it with reckless abandon?

I strongly recommend a deep dive into the uncompromisingly rigorous READER OVER YOUR SHOULDER, by Graves and Hodge. Pretty sure you'll find it bracing. No, it won't solve the problem; but you may feel better afterwards.

is it the type of book that is best experienced in the flesh, or can I get the kindle version?

You most certainly can get the Kindle version, and you might as well, too. But note: this is a very stern book, and its authors take a very hard line. They accord no mercy in their criticisms -- not even to the greatest masters of English prose. They're savage and relentless.

It is, as I say, actually quite bracing. Perhaps a little like being dressed down by a particularly testy and persnickety Marine drill instructor. Makes you feel fully alive.
