The one good thing about the neo-Victorians is that they make it easier to understand the 19th century. When I was a kid, Victorian prudishness seemed completely mystifying. What puzzles me most is the spectacular forgetfulness of those who would muzzle and shame their ideological foes, and enforce policies of euphemistic circumlocution. The verdict of history on these practices is so spectacularly clear and consistent that only a fool ignores it.
