A note: Rachmaninov esteemed Hoffmann above all his contemporaries (and dedicated to him his third piano concerto -- although, alas, Hoffmann never performed the work.) Also: it was Hoffmann who insisted upon the Curtis Institute's tuition policy (i.e., no tuition.)
