An honest answer to "Why do your opponents disagree with you?" probably has to begin "Because they think we are…" rather than "Because they are…."
Your political opponents understand you roughly as well, and think about you roughly as often, as Kalahari bushmen do the Inuit. You're not a hostile member of a rival tribe; you're too alien for that. You're a thing that goes bump in the night -- a bogeyman. You're a fiction.
