200 years ago today, Felix Mendelssohn gave his first public concert, age 9. Surely there has never been a greater child/teenage musician, including Mozart. A miracle! But those who say that he didn't develop in adulthood are wrong - his music became ever deeper and more layered.

Schubert and Saint-Saens were perhaps roughly as precocious as Mendelssohn, and all three were rather more so than Mozart. Worth noting, too, that Mendelssohn had a sister, Rebecca, who married Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet, one of the 19th century's greatest mathematicians.
