Today, in our math communication seminar, we are going to discuss this piece on mathematical writing by Don Knuth http://jmlr.csail.mit.edu/reviewing-papers/knuth_mathematical_writing.pdf …
May I humbly propose that every person concerned with the effect of his or her prose on its readers ought to read Orwell's "Politics and the English Language"? And that those who find Knuth persnickety should consult Graves's and Hodge's "The Reader Over Your Shoulder"?

I'd also recommend the Orwell essay. Another interesting read (for technical writing in particular) is the first of the 'Lucidity and Science' papers by McIntyre ( http://www.atm.damtp.cam.ac.uk/mcintyre/papers/LHCE/lucidity-science-I.pdf … ).
