a lot of things about the business end of writing can be unpleasant, but it's real weird to me when established writers go on and on about the physical torture of actually writing.

I think Alan Garner said he did it to get the voices out of his head. That made sense to me. (I don't find that writing is physical torture, but if it were it would still be hard to stop.)
