Anyone who peruses even cursorily the mathematics genealogy database will note that the overwhelming majority of mathematics PhDs have zero known students. Some of these persons have become professors at institutions granting no graduate degrees. But most have left academia.

May be worth giving a little explicit detail here: of all the math PhDs in the genealogy database, those with no students are about three times as many as those with students. And mathematicians who've left academia are less likely even to be in the database in the first place.
