While Twitter can feel like looking over a cliff into a scary void of anger, hopelessness, and vindictiveness, Mastodon feels like walking into your friendly neighbourhood café. I don't know what the future holds for it, but right now it is just what I need.

Mastodon comes with content warnings and privacy filters per post as standard, which is such an important step to making the community welcoming and safe. Not to mention the strict codes of conduct and helpful admins/moderators of each instance working hard to keep it safe.

I love that each instance is kind of your own little neighbourhood, which goes a long way to feeling connected to the people you interact with. But the wider community is sweet and cares about people and supporting them, which is significant and important to me.

The first and most important one for me is . It feels like a small, close-knit family of people who care. I get more replies and meaningful interaction there in a couple days than I do out of a month of Twitter.

Having a rough brain day today, but I'm trying to be thankful, and while I'm thankful about a lot of things, I've been thinking a lot about various social media alternatives I've experimented with that have given me new communities and connections to enjoy.

Dear fellow devs, When you invest in a surveillance capitalist like Twitter & help them build their platform, they’ll have your back. And by that I mean they’ll throw you under the bus first chance they get. We all made the mistake. Avoid it next time.

I’ve been DMing with about his bizarre need to verify white supremacists on his platform for the last 8 months or so, and after all the exchanges, I’ve reached a conclusion: the dude simply does not seem to give a fuck.

after having had heard about it for months, Berners-Lee's Vanity Fair interview tipped me over to giving it a try (rather than complaining about what's broken, let's build what works) ... just setting up on & would love to connect there

Hey why are you participating in a censorship campaign against Indigenous women on here? We're dropping like flies all of a sudden as racists target our accounts.

Mastodon has 500 characters, spoiler warnings, you can selectively make posts NSFW or followers-only rather than the entire account, lists, custom emoji, focal points for thumbnails, delete & redraft function, strictly chronological home feed, apps for iOS, Android &co

A "federation" in software means that independent service providers interact over a common protocol, e.g. e-mail is federated. Mastodon is a federated social network & Twitter alternative that liberates communities from a corporate top-down structure...

Really enjoying these days. I feel like i found a good set of people to follow so I have some interesting content that I would otherwise miss out on. Not yet enough to completely replace twitter for me, but it's on a very good way!

What we need is a standartized, decentralized social network, like the e-mail of social media, so people can indeed take matters into their own hands and rule themselves. It's here and it's called Mastodon. People are already building cooperatives on top of it.
