The only way it would not work is if the market went up one day and down the next everyday with no direction long term and we know that never the case.
It's always moving in some direction up or down.

I attempted it with spx today and got hosed. What additional confirmation would have helped me?

The cross was never confirmed. If you look on the 30 min. The candle itself crossed but not the SMA. That’s a sign that it could be close but the cross itself is the true sign of confirmation. That’s why you may want to wait for the back test to see if the break holds.
