The tweet went viral with retweets, likes, and sharing on a public page so you don't need to follow the user to see the tweet. Now everyone is just retweeting and liking it without following.

It’s how the twitter algo operates. The home page (if you don’t have the chrinological mode on) is curated to to boost content that recieves organic engagements. A tweet is more likely to be RT/interacted with based on key words and reposts from larger content creators.

It mostly has to do with how Twitter runs as a business. The algorithm uplifts anything that has major key words on trending topics, bumps it up to the Explore/Search tab, then boom. Some few words get blowtorched into the mainstream engagement for 24 hours.
