As I look at the chart I notice the 10 crosses the 50 earlier in the day (around 1030am) so why was this time different? Trying to figure out when to buy and not buy, crossed 2x today but only this afternoon seems to hold

Couple reason. First just look at the crosses. The first cross was weak. The green 10sma never split hard from the blue 50. The green 10 also continues downward with the blue 50, instead of going upward while the blue continues down as the second cross does.
