At least you can see time after time how it works. The pumper picks a stock. He tells his paid followers in advance. They set off a buy algo. Then he gives the stock to his 100,000's unpaid followers tells them to hold. They jump in Once last suckers are in. Stock gets dumped.

$DATS was a great pump. The Pumper and his paid followers dumped and made millions? Unpaid followers? Most not so lucky. I made around 45% last trade but I should of made over a 100%. I didn't think it would get pumped that high. My Bad. Next time I'll do better.

Few small companies that get day traded actually do that. But stocks like $NFLX , $MNRA etc have.
