A new trader should NEVER short a low float volume stock.
You are setting yourself for possible disaster.
With shorting a big cap like AMD. Definitely no problem putting in a hard stop.
Of course I also use and change rising stops on a high volume trade when I'm making $.

Yes hard stops are fine to use.
