That mental stop is sending me a signal that the trade is not working and that I should be getting out. So why not a hard stop? Because the MM can see my hard stop. Drop the price quickly and steal my shares then bring the stock back up higher. Yes they do this.

If it's a small float stock/light volume. I usually don't keep a hard stop. Unfortunately that's a risk I have to take. Need to have confidence in the trade and watch it closely with a mental stop. When my mental stop gets hit in this situation. That price is sending me a signal. twitter.com/MasterBJones/s…
I’ve had some stops getting taken out where I was sitting there watching the chart like WTF? How TF did they just drop it down that hard for 1/10 of a millisecond to scoop up my shares and then pop it the whole way back up to an even higher price. 🤦‍♂️

Even though there are many momentum indicators that can be used, when I see that stop hunt candle (crazy long bottom wick out of nowhere) happen, I’m staying long. More times than not, the price goes up after that candle.
