The public chases.
Industry sells/Then shorts.
News comes out and stock tanks.

How did you know there was gonna be an offering tho? Any specific way to tell?
So what role does the company play in this (when the industry knows this news early)? How do they get this news?

Take the L and move that money somewhere to make it back. Other option is having that money tied up for months hoping for it to recover, which it might never do.
