So I was talking stocks at a party before and about how the FED is controlled by the government and how Powell is only a Puppet and some one stood up and said the FED is independent.

YES, Very Little ,,, The should read the book Rule by Secrecy by Jim Marrs, Small but informative book, Great Sunday read...Should be taught at schools
