If all you did was short stocks that Spiked you most likely would never lose on a trade.
The only problem is you can't get shares .
The industry Hogs them all. Why? Because those risk free trades.
If there's no shares to borrow the industry just naked shorts them anyway.

It might be worth doing that.
There are traders who feast on these "low volume pumps" by shorting them ad nauseam. They literally track these plays over the long run to get statistics on how to best execute such shorts.
