    4 not 3! U.S. university administrators should provide incoming int'l students with workshops on academic freedom, freedom of expression, and the importance of pluralistic debate. We should develop protocols and best practices for events that are controversial or sensitive. 4/4

    U.S. university administrators should not allow Chinese government-funded organizations, such as Confucius Institutes (CIs), to be set up within universities. They should exist as stand-alone organizations with affiliations, funding, and budget expenditures made transparent.3/

    The U.S. government should significantly increase funding to schools, including K-12 and higher ed, for area studies and foreign language training. It should also reinstate the Fulbright program for HK/China and for Fulbrighters from China. We shouldn't deny access to research.2/

    I had three recommendations: a thread:USG should consider whether Chinese Student and Scholar Associations (CSSAs) holding official affiliation with Chinese embassy/consulates constitute foreign agents, and should register accordingly under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.1/

    Many Chinese do not support their government's restrictions on their access to information. Rather than banning WeChat and Tiktok, which many Chinese are rightly proud of for their innovative technology, 2/3

    Ugh. The worst kind of cultural mumbo-jumbo. Common in business how-to books as well, but depressing that it is also invokes by intelligence agencies that should know better.
