This is ingenious scholarly work that answers the question of why there isn't more black economic attainment, on average, 160 years after the Civil War: We're only one generation away from Jim Crow discrimination.

🚨 I am excited to share my Job Market Paper. "Jim Crow and Black Economic Progress After Slavery" (w/ @ReichardtHugo) We provide new evidence that a Black family's socioeconomic status today strongly depends on their historical exposure to racially oppressive institutions.

Some who live in a right-wing bubble are denying Tuesday's results. They're worse than NY liberal film critic Pauline Kael, who admitted after Nixon's election landslide, "I live in a rather special world. I only know one person who voted for Nixon. Where they are I don’t know."

Lamentations 3:31 “The Lord will not cast off forever. Though he cause grief, he will have compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.”

Worth remembering as we consider election results, whichever side we are on: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea." (Psalm 46)

Why have so many journalists moved away from even the pursuit of objectivity? They are unknowing or knowing believers in Stephen Jay Gould’s claim that our lives have no objective meaning, so “If you want meaning to your life, you have to construct your own.”

Thanks to all of you who sent Bible verses that offer comfort. I'll tweet a few this week, starting with Matthew 5:4 -- "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

When you or someone near you is suffering, what's your favorite Bible verse that offers comfort? I'll prime the pump with Isaiah 43:2, which also begins a fine hymn: "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and the waves will not overcome you."

To be winsomely Reformed is to faithfully contextualize. Anyone who has ever read Keller honestly knows he's been clear that we may not compromise the truth of God's word in order to be liked, nor should we be kind as a *strategy* to win people over b/c the gospel will offend.

Many in the PCA treat a desire to contextualize as a progressive drift that accommodates culture, forsaking fidelity to Scripture & our standards. But what is contextualization? A 🧵on what @timkellernyc says in his book on preaching & Center Church. 1/11

Augustine 1600 years ago taught that we are naturally selfish and prone to mess up our lives. If we’re mentally ill and given an apartment with no strings attached, we’ll probably use it to stay apart from those who might help us. fixhomelessness.org/2022/limits-of via

Good article. I want to avoid a civil war and believe compromises on two issues, curricula and LGBTQ vs. religious liberty, are doable. I'm not sure one on abortion is. , how would that work?

Yesterday marked 325 years since the birth of Zenger House’s namesake, colonial editor John Peter Zenger. His courage as a newsman paved the way for freedom of the press. In the 1730s, his New York Weekly Journal reported that royal governor William Cosby was a thief and liar. 1/

Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks: Finding Success, Happiness, and Deep Purpose in the Second Half Of Life (Penguin, 2022) shows that as raw smarts decline wisdom can increase; long-term husbands and wives can add companionship to romance. #Olaskybooks
