As I recall, it was not only the voting system but also the Falklands War that did it for the SDP. Folk forget how deeply unpopular the first Thatcher term was until that war. Without it, an SDP - Liberal Alliance government was very possible. #r4Today #bbcR4Today

Yes, though it was clear that it wasn’t going to actually win. But surprised to hear Ashdown playing down importance of the voting system - surely a new party is going to get to 25% (as it did) before it gets to 40 and deserves more than a handful of seats for doing so?
