  The article explains that there was no control group. As the article also states, the authors believe that (i) quarantines are costly to students & families and (ii) will be used more if masks are not.

  Are you familiar with the concept of filters? Masks filter stuff. Depending on the filter quality, a mask will stop X% of aerosols and bigger droplets that contain virus, from traveling the distance needed for a new infection to occur. Physics and probability. No study needed.
