No, the opposite. Older high-risk people who were led to believe that masks provided excellent protection, thought it safe to go to crowded supermarkets etc. Clearly not the case, with large winter wave despite extensive mask wearing. Public health must always be honest.https://twitter.com/kareem_carr/status/1420394688117460994 …

A lot of folks seem to think masks could only possibly work through physically stopping virus particles. I can tell people like that aren’t used to working with human data. Masks could just as easily work by discouraging people from socializing.

This is a very good point. Masks are too often relied upon as a safe measure against Covid absent data. And it’s not that one shouldn’t wear it, but it’s uncertain efficacy needs to be better communicated

My grandparents included. They legit thought they couldn't catch or spread covid if they wore a mask. They've done more harm than good.

Same for my parents. My father was traveling on the subway all of last/fall winter thinking he was protected because he was wearing a mask. I can't tell you how stressed out I was.

Aren't all these points correct to some degree and indeed the part about the signal of masks discouraging socializing seems to be a significant point behind and consistent with other types of sciency or pseudo sciency messaging/initiatives being pushed by public health, govts etc

I delivered to several stores until Feb, right from the beginning. They jammed all the elders together from 6am until 7am to 'protect them' from the younger people. It was insane how many were in stores early hrs, full capacity at times. Yea, science.

Not only that but forcing everyone to go one way,1 way in/ out. Force MORE steps because what you needed was 1/2 down aisle that instead of just going down that aisle force to go down a different one THEN 1/2 up to get your item. Tell me how MORE STEPS/TIME, made things safer??

Masks are symbols of fear and submission. They're the swastika armbands of our era.

Masks make you talk way louder, stand closer, and repeat yourself so others can hear u. I estimate I talk 50%-100% louder with mask. Loud talking is known to emit more particles. If masks filter 30-50% of particles but I talk 100% louder, not much of a benefit.

Nope. Never was a widespread belief that masks provided "excellent protection". That's because it was never communicated as such. The public was repeatedly educated that masks REDUCED RISK, not PREVENTED COVID. That's what they do, regardless of the "belief of what they do."

The hype around masks has been huge and has led to a very dangerous false sense of security:https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/16/cdc-director-says-face-masks-may-provide-more-protection-than-coronavirus-vaccine-.html …
