The irony is the US has a Surgeon General who *should* be the one helping set and communicate policy. The Surgeon General is a Senate-confirmed presidential appointment and thus responsible to the President and Congress.

The irony is that last year Dr. Scott Atlas had all the power. He ended up advocating a “rise up” and visiting the elderly in Thanksgiving without giving any thought to advising people to isolate before visiting. That’s how “protecting the vulnerable” worked in practice.
