1)Great that @ThomasEWoods hosted this exchange between @EricTopol & @MartinKulldorff. But I was surprised that Topol stated, w/o challenge from Kuldorff, that "Natural herd has never been established" & that only vaccines stop "all infections & viruses."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uG6sGowVz6M&feature=youtu.be …

Herd immunity can be reached through natural infection, vaccines or a combination of both. No infectious disease epidemiologist will contest that. Natural herd immunity was common before the era of vaccines. A recent example is Zika virus.

The lack of understanding of basic virology is really astonishing. Some even intentionally stretch the truth or deceive outright for ideological or political purposes. I wonder if the Spanish Flu was like this?

Topol with the appeal to purity on "real lockdowns," cites California whose in Stay at Home order for months. His "evidence" for it not working is it's not being adhered to. This is not true, see below mobility data from Google. Its being adhered to the best extent possible.pic.twitter.com/UEjwBoYVPe

Furthermore, we need to start asking a better question. Why is California now facing the steepest climbs and surges in ICU's in the country? Bounce back effect? Natural phenomenas looking for equilibrium?pic.twitter.com/OW8x1mWYsA

Taking this 3 ways of human immunity : 1. Natural infection 2. Natural immunity 3. Vaccine immunity To your best estimate what would be the share in percentage of each to reach Herd Immunity ?

Ultimately it depends on the cost, both economic and in human lives lost. We could reach herd immunity purely via natural infection if symptoms are mild and mortality is low, e.g. covid among young and healthy people. For the old/vulnerable, vax is the appropriate option.

Thanks for this, Martin. As you may recall, in his recent exchange w/you, Dr. Topol approvingly quoted Vox calling herd immunity "the worst idea of 2020," & he further stated that "natural herd immunity has never been established, NEVER been established..." begin 5:02 in podcast.
