Prof Francois Balloux Retweeted Justin Hart

It wasn't science that ran policy, it was public opinion. In a democracy, scientists advice, elected politicians decide on behalf of the people. This bit worked ...https://twitter.com/justin_hart/status/1298785095940059136 …

      Prof Francois Balloux added,

      Justin Hart @justin_hart
Science should INFORM policy. The lesson of 2020: you should NEVER let science RUN policy.

Also decisions were often made by early first-movers not responding to public demands. I don't think the the public demanded that Washington State close their public schools or their University, but they did, and it set an example which people looked to. Same with Harvard.

The problem is that the least level-headed people make the earliest drastic decisions but then they are covered as things we should all be expecting to do, rather than an out-of-mainstream idea. The latter would be more likely if there was more of a unified voice from scientists.

More unified voice of scientists ... I'm afraid we're as divided as the rest of the population.

I agree this is all very civil and pleasant. Though, what would happen if I set up a joint twitter account with Devi Sridhar, Eric Topol, Alasdair Munro, Martin Kulldorff and Sunetra Gupta. I could envision some heated exchanges. Mind you, maybe that's the way out ...

Happy to join in a discussion with any of the above, with civil and informative exchanges. @SunetraGupta is also a very calm and friendly person. Just name the venue and time. @EricTopol @devisridhar @apsmunro

Those of us who have long worked on infectious disease outbreaks should engage in discussions, and I would be delighted to have a #COVID19 debate with @mtosterholm. Either on his podcast, or any other venue.
