Is anyone doing a comprehensive monitoring of elementary-school based cases/outbreaks in the US? I feel like this is really important data to get the best, clear-eyed empirical assessment of the risk level here.

I think there's a really good body of evidence from abroad that in-person *elementary* school with proper precautions is actually quite low risk. But it's hard to get an apples to apples comparison because the levels of the virus here have been considerably higher.

Sweden kept child-care and primary schools open with higher prevalence than current US levels, with zero deaths among children ages 1-15. Teachers had same risk as average of other professions. But very few people on the left side of the US political spectrum want to use Sweden as anything other than an example of a complete failure and a warning of the upcoming apocalypse. That's how things turn out when vilifying something for political gain instead of understanding.

Noteworthy, too, that France has reopened all schools -- all levels -- and positivity in France is currently about ~5%, which is roughly comparable to the United States as a whole. Of course, many parts of the U.S. with closed schools have lower positivity than France right now.
