Glad to debate @EpiEllie, as most lockdown/school closure proponents do not dare to. It is not mental health vs death. While lockdowns can reduce short-term mortality it increases long-term mortality. Anti-herders are more dangerous than anti-vaxxers.https://www.spiked-online.com/2020/04/29/delaying-herd-immunity-is-costing-lives/ …

It would be great to see some real public engagement between experts in this area. These are policy questions of the utmost importance.

Correct-that’s pretty short term thinking from the lockdown crowd. The downstream impacts of kids missing a year of school in particular, becoming disengaged, dropping out, having lower earnings, lack of health care, etc are not negligible and DO impact mortality.

Uhm, we have seen plenty of people miss years of school due to wars and natural disasters. We have the ability to counteract that.

This tweet makes me wonder if @EpiEllie has ever been, or worked closely with, a kid who depends on school for lifesaving services-there are many. Even during pandemics, we still need to check our privilege.

Do we even know lockdowns reduce short term mortality? I’ve seen nothing showing a relationship between lockdowns and lower mortality.
