It is absolutely stunning to observe how the scientific community has reacted to the public health aspects of the pandemic. When the fog clears, one of the consequences of the pandemic will be public distrust in science and scientists.

What specifically do you mean, Martin? I mean apart from the retracted NEJM/Lancet papers, the cherry picking of evidence in top journals as if Science is non-objective, or the overly risk-averse (at the cost of economy) clinical reaction to "things we don't know", what else?

Many scientists without prior work on infectious disease outbreaks (+some with) have pushed for general population-wide #lockdown instead of minimizing mortality by isolating high-risk elderly while younger low-risk people build #HerdImmunity.https://www.spiked-online.com/2020/04/29/delaying-herd-immunity-is-costing-lives/ …

This would be a very bad strategy. Probably you also don’t know what Spiked is, or its history. Have a look at the Wikipedia article:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiked_(magazine) …

I am curious to know why you think it is a bad strategy. The key is to minimize mortality by the end of the pandemic.

The difficulty is twofold: firstly it’s not implementable. Secondly it definitely wouldn’t minimise death or economic damage. It’s better to try to implement implementable strategies. I’ve advocated a South Korean type response from the start, it’s certainly doing better than UK.

Thanks for responding Rupert. Except for nursing home failures in Stockholm, Sweden has implemented said strategy. While lookdowns can lead to fewer deaths in the short term, it is mortality by the end of the pandemic that matters. South Korea has much further left to travel.

Well... except for all that. And it’s a curious business: officially the Swedish policy isn’t ‘herd immunity’. They’re also nowhere near it, below 10%. Expect a further wave in the winter.

That’s what it all comes down to- how much longer to not see a second spike in 🇸🇪 before declaring de facto HI. The scorching 🥵 of AZ, TX, and FL this summer didn’t stop large outbreaks and every other Euro country has already seen some kind of recurrence. And yet 🇸🇪’s R is 👌pic.twitter.com/bijXbA7nM6

Tübingen a town in Germany implemented focused protection as suggested by @gbdeclaration. All contacts in elderly and nursing Homes tested before interacting. separate shopping hours, Taxi in the Price of Public Transport. No lockdown, the result lowest mortality rate in Germany.
