"Britain is playing musical chairs with different services and businesses". Instead, "to minimize mortality, one must go all-in for the age-based strategy.' My oped in @spectator:https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/herd-immunity-is-still-key-in-the-fight-against-covid-19 …

A terrifying but absolutely essential read from @Harry_Stevens. Do the math yourself - for America to reach "herd immunity" from the coronavirus, at least 2.95 million people would have to die. https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/health/coronavirus-herd-immunity-simulation-vaccine/ … pic.twitter.com/cYQXfI5YPg

The errors given here: 1. Given fatality is confounded by age. 60-90% of deaths in each jurisdiction come from 10-15% of the population. 2. Protecting older and vulnerable groups changes this, 3. Propose herd immunity is presented for highest estimate, could be 20%.

Also this joker had the fatality rate at 1.5%. A lot of research has been done on the subject and estimates are between 0.2 and 0.6 percent. That graphic is nothing but fear porn.

So how many people do you think will die if we pursue herd immunity? How many more than if we, oh I don't know, don't do this?

Thanks for asking. All strategies lead to herd immunity, so unclear which strategy you refer to. No respectible epidemiologist will predict the number of dead. Depends on still unknown parameters. Mortality is minimized with an age-specific strategy that protects the old.

'All strategies lead to herd immunity' Yeah, the Taiwanese strategy doesn't lead to herd immunity. Also doesn't lead to deaths.
