Can you provide a reference? Don't want to accuse him if not true. Now, if you wish to learn about herd immunity, I recommend infectious disease epidemiologists such as @SunetraGupta, rather than an evolutionary biologist.

Thank you. The 1-1/R0 formula assumes uniformity, with everyone equally likely to infect everyone else. Useful in teaching, but never true in real life. So, no respectable epidemiologist would use it to estimate herd immunity for an ongoing epidemic. Also, we do not know R0.
