It’s to early to say that countries will be able to suppress the virus in the long term without strict measures. But this uncertainty cuts both ways: we don’t know that they won’t succeed either. What we do know is that, if they succeed, many lives will be saved.

The choice is thus between a strategy where the outcome is uncertain and one where we know for sure many people will die. Until the uncertainty is resolved, it makes sense to opt for suppression to keep that as an option.
