In recognition of concern by authors about what the National Emergency Library consists of and is for, I've pushed my entire week's schedule off my desk, and I'm here to help you. If after reading http://blog.archive.org/2020/03/30/internet-archive-responds-why-we-released-the-national-emergency-library/ … you are still uncomfortable with the situation, ping me.

Thanks for the response, Jason. It’s still not legal to let everyone with an internet connection read all the copyrighted books they physically can, for free, without consent of the author or publisher. That IS piracy, whether you’d prefer to think of it that way or not.

I understand the issues. I do want to ask if you have a book on the site you'd like removed, and I can help with that, and feel free to let a person know about me if you've seen them on twitter saying their book is on the site and they want it removed.

Right, so, you know what you’re doing is wrong, but every individual author has to take the time to opt out or sue? Come on. The real problem here is that you’re promoting the idea that a book’s worth is only the paper it’s printed on—that authors’ labor has no value at all.

The federal minimum wage rate is $7.25 an hour. People earn that in occupations that are messy, physically demanding, damaging and health-threatening. If you're making more than full-time at minimum wage just from writing, then congrats, you're amply compensated for your labor.

There’s a lot to unpack there, but I’m just going to start with this: How many hours do you think it takes to write a novel?

Hundreds, thousands of cumulative hours, no doubt. It still doesn't change the fact that you're making a bourgeois complaint about your travails in what is essentially a leisure occupation.

Cool, I guess I’ll tell Karl Marx his was a “leisure occupation” and therefore his labor as never had any value.

And seriously, what could be more bourgeois than the overweening sense of entitlement that says you're entitled to the fruits of someone else's labour for free, just because you want it? Wait, no... that's beyond bourgeois, it's downright aristocratic in its arrogance.

          a) Leisure is important to all classes. Part of the point of Socialism is making sure everyone can enjoy life. Hair shirts are not revolutionary. b) Stories help us make sense of the world so we can take action in it. They move people. They're essential to any revolution.

Incidentally, I doubt most people would agree that cultural production is a bourgeois frivolity, especially right now. It's what's currently keeping half the world sane. Also, writers don't generally have very much money. Where did you get the impression we were rolling in it?
