The Commission's work programme for 2022 was just released. A lot of information on upcoming legislation. Some interesting examples: a European chips act, implementation of the OECD tax deal, a zero pollution package and a European media freedom act.

Interesting to see a renewed push for "European Champions" coming out of France. Allowing governments to pick winners and losers could mean bad news for consumers, smaller member states and incentivizing competitiveness.

Useful background note on the upcoming EU-Western Balkans summit below. Informal working dinner before the summit also has many important points on the agenda such as developments in Afghanistan, relations with the US in the context of AUKUS partnership and relations with China.

D66 leader Kaag announces it will start negotiations to form a government that contains the same parties as the current one. "We will do it well, or not at all" -> starting talks is not the same as agreeing to a government, and D66 will likely (try to) sell its hide dearly.

It looks like the Berlin Volksentscheid on Enteignung of Deutsche Wohnen will pass. Affordable housing seemed issue nr 1, looking at the posters hanging around in Berlin. The issue will likely end at . Ultimately, solution to affordable housing has to be found federally.

During the “elefantenrunde”, an interview with all the Spitzenkandidaten, Lindner from the FDP indicates he wants to first talk with the Greens, to coordinate their position, likely vis-a-vis coalition talks with the SPD. Ampel (SPD, Greens, FDP) coalition is in view.

Laschet now saying Germany is likely to have a three-party government. If CDU/CSU comes first, Jamaika will be tried first, then Traffic Light, then GroKo. If SPD comes first, invert the first two.

Seemingly no majority for rot-rot-grün, wasn’t the likeliest coalition, but does reduce negotiation position for Greens and SPD. Sub 5% die Linke would also reduce leverage of the SPD, who are likely to want to press ahead to form a government.

Very close exitpoll, showing a tie between CDU/CSU and SPD. Very interesting to see how this develops as the (postal) vote gets counted. While not as high as hoped, Greens increase from 8.9% to 15%: the third biggest party of the country (in a crucial position).

While large coalitions have become the standard in the splintered (but highly representative) Dutch Parliament, in Germany it’s far less normal. Complex negotiations might lie ahead if the election results call for Ampel or Jamaica coalitions.

First exit polls for the are expected around 18:00, but they come with a warning: due to the higher % of postal votes the exit polls might not be fully reliable. Especially because specific groups (the elderly) might have done more postal voting to reduce COVID exposure.

Such a key graph to understand German politics: despite Fridays for future marches to activate young people, almost 40% of votes come from +60 demographic. Much work remains to be done on voter mobilisation, especially for parties depending on the young vote (like the Greens).

Good morning from a beautifully sunny Berlin! With polling booths closing at 18:00 and a record number of postal votes already made, we aren’t that far away from the end of the Bundestagwahl 2021. I’ll try and share some thoughts as results come in through the night!

Arrived in Berlin today to visit friends and experience the German election night on Sunday. “Friday for future” climate strike drew large crowds in front of the Bundestag today. Climate remains a divise topic, but the youth seem wholeheartedly convinced of its importance.

Nice to see many references to young people. A union which cares about the future of young people is a forward looking union. Great reminder too of who the EU accession process should serve: “We owe it to all those the young people who believe in a future in Europe”

Preliminary results came in for 🇳🇴 elections. A center-left labour coalition will follow. Good result for protectionist center party. Far left & greens both above 4% (for now): means they get “evening out”-seats -> more splintered parliament.
