UPDATE: Union Pacific, one of the railroads that successfully fought off workers' demands for paid sick days, announced a record $7 billion profit. The company said it spent $1.7 billion more on stock buybacks in 2022 than on pay and benefits for all of its employees.

We need an accurate Homeless Count next week.
That means we need enough volunteers, working technology, and other safeguards to ensure we have an accurate count.

But first... Why is the Homeless Count so important?

Think about how we could use that money to improve our Metro system.
We could have:
✅Fare-free Metro
✅More frequent service
✅Clean trains and busses
✅Unarmed professionals to help folks dealing with homelessness or mental health issues.
As a city, we need to do better.

Yesterday's Public Safety Committee meeting was a sad example of how our city can fail the communities who need our help the most.
Along with the Robot Dog, the committee advanced a huge contract with LAPD that doubles down on our broken policing system.
Let's dig in. (thread)

Today, LA's Public Safety Committee will decide whether we should allow the LAPD to use a "robot dog"
These mechs were already rejected in NYC because they were used to aggressively police working-class communities of color.
We can't allow this dystopian machine in LA. (thread)

A life-saving drug is not effective if a person who needs that drug cannot afford it. How many more Americans must die before Congress finally has the guts to stop the pharmaceutical industry from getting away with murder?

At a time when half of older Americans have no retirement savings & 55% of seniors are trying to survive on less than $25,000 a year, our job is not to cut Social Security or raise taxes on workers. Our job is to expand it so all seniors can live with the dignity they deserve.

I will be re-introducing my bill to extend Social Security's solvency for the next 75 years & expand benefits by $2,400 a year. How? By scrapping the cap. Today, a billionaire pays the same amount into Social Security as someone making $160,000 a year. Let's end that absurdity.

The last thing we need is another commission to propose cuts to Social Security & Medicare. The last time we had one, it proposed cutting Social Security benefits for middle class seniors by up to 35% & cutting tax rates for billionaires. We must instead expand Social Security.

🚨LA City Council just took a 2nd vote on its tenant protection package, officially approving the new policy. 🚨
Still needs mayor’s sig, but should go into effect before the city’s longstanding COVID-19 anti-eviction rules expire at end of the month

The count is conducted by ordinary people. If we don't have enough volunteers, we can't get a good picture of which areas need the most resources.
That's why it's so important to sign up to help at theycountwillyou.org/volunteer
But what other safeguards can we use to get better data?

COVID tenant protections expire in just 12 days.
That’s why we want you to hear from the people whose lives will be affected most – the tenants.
If we don’t win permanent protections on Friday, far too many renters will end up on the streets.
We can’t let that happen.

Traffic violence is the #1 killer of children in LA, and it's only getting worse.
We desperately need:
✅Better + more crosswalks
✅Slower car speeds in residential neighborhoods
✅Safety improvements near schools
✅Bike lanes + better transit to give folks options to get around

Last year in Los Angeles, more people were killed by someone driving a car than by someone wielding a gun. The second-largest U.S. city has become the traffic violence capital of the nation.

For government to be accountable to the community, it needs to be accessible to the people.
Right now, LA's system is so complicated that it almost seems like it's designed to confuse the residents it's supposed to serve.
Here's how we're bringing transparency to City Hall.🧵

When we talk about the movement towards global oligarchy, we're talking about two-thirds of all new wealth in the world flowing into the hands of the top 1% since 2020, while 81 billionaires now own more wealth than the bottom half of humanity. Yes. We need a global wealth tax.

Renters make up the majority of residents in LA, but far too often tenants are left feeling powerless, battling against the entire system to stay in their homes.
If we want to solve our homelessness crisis, we need to implement common sense renter protections.
