It's now been confirmed that's how they did it.http://www.sacbee.com/latest-news/article209913514.html …

I am glad they got him. But at the same time, isn't that illegal? It shouldn't be used for police I think, it's our personal information.
-
I doubt that it's illegal because I don't think they'd do something that would so flagrantly jeopardize the case. My guess is that when you send the DNA in for analysis it's covered in the terms of service that you accept but never read.
-
Whether it SHOULD be legal is another question.

So the lesson here is think twice before checking certain boxes on your DNA test if you suspect any of your family members are secret monsters. Unless you’re hoping they get caught, that is.

Apparently the Perp would have been caught sooner but, the dept. had to wait for approval to spend the $9.99 to join the ancestry site.

Ancestry has made exceptions. Not needed in this case. Local police conducted surveillance. Worked with the local trash company. Top-secret mission. Trash company driver turns the corner, stops, FBI goes through the trash.

Don’t give your DNA. Corrupt and/or inept law enforcement can ruin your life. Just ask

Although not a murderer that we know of, we had a police officer here in my hometown that was serial rapists and his under the radar for several years before finally being caught. He used his job to both stalk his many victims, and to hide his crime

U just cannot beat American intelligence in solving crimes. No country comes close this kind of detective work. A cold case murder, re-opened and shut n finally behind bars. He thought he could get away with it, but it all catches up somehow. Justice!
