As a woman attorney who was public defender in 1980’s when women attorneys required to wear skirt suits in court, I take your point. I agree that standard for barring the public should be high, but judges should have some say re officers of the court showing respect for system.

If defendants have to abide by a dress code in a courtroom I want the Judges & Prosecutors in full Court Dress, powdered wigs and all. What does it matter what someone is wearing anyway, I thought Justice was blind!?

I remember hearing from defense attorneys how important it is to keep a spare closet filled with suits and jackets because plenty of defendants simply don't own that kind of clothing.

Respect for the judge and judicial process through dress codes is not all that much to ask.

This is a generational deal. My son had a court appearance and it never dawned on him to wear a coat and tie until I mentioned it. But I don’t see the need for trial observers to dress a certain way over and above common decency. Could be, but great question.
