They were careful to frame their concerns as questions, not a demand for rescission. But the final outcome clearly reflected their doubts.pic.twitter.com/SekEaHoHJY
Jones was raped at 14, beaten and abused while pregnant, gave birth & abused her own son & left him to die. A horrific crime.
But she was a black girl, shockingly brutalized, betrayed by adults around her, with no access to choice in whether to bear a child of rape.
In prison, she turned a life cut short down the path of remorse & rehabilitation, attaining the implausible goal of acceptance into Harvard.
Then two powerful white men judged her insufficiently self-effacing and too fragile to survive Harvard—even though she survived *prison*.
Jones's story is by any account remarkable. But how many individuals of less unique distinction encounter the same kinds of barriers?
The irony of a black woman's path out of bondage into status being blocked by white men who specialize in antislavery and redress is potent.
Luckily, @nyuniversity was more enlightened. God forbid that other institutions of higher learning had the same gatekeepers as Harvard.
Thanks @danamo for posting the @MarshallProj piece on Jones.
Thanks for this thread.
I am a Harvard alum and this story makes me ashamed.
Indeed. Let's call it what it is - Ivy League gaslighting.
