Yes in fact that's one of the odd things, people talking about reducing incarceration w/o saying what they think prison is for. @ThisIsShani

At least "prison abolitionists" have a clear answer--no one should go to prison. Of course that leads to other questions. @ThisIsShani

@xenocryptsite Right. No one is speaking about the origins/goal of prisons, and proposing alternatives.

@xenocryptsite Although in discussions to disrupt school to prison pipeline, restorative justice is frequently advocated in urban schools.

Of course, the US doesn't have such a high incarceration rate b/c other countries abolished prison but the US hasn't. @ThisIsShani

So there are policy differences and degrees of possibility, I guess. Again I don't see much clear writing on it. @ThisIsShani

@xenocryptsite no writing on restorative justice, or alt prison policy?

I meant that I don't see much clear writing on what the US does differently on prisons than it used to do/other countries do. @ThisIsShani

It's hard to answer! But part of clear writing is admitting what you don't know, I think. @ThisIsShani

@xenocryptsite I've seen write-ups on how Germany treats juveniles versus US. I think that was @MarshallProj.

          I don't like German numbers w/o US comparisons. "Few" in US serve > 15 too. @markmobility @MarshallProj @ThisIsShanipic.twitter.com/Sv2zIpxR2w

IDK if 70% of US people sentenced to prison in the US are out in 2 years but maybe not that far. @markmobility @MarshallProj @ThisIsShani

Like, what specific things merit fines in Germany but prison time in US? That'd be useful to know. @markmobility @MarshallProj @ThisIsShani
