There was one problem: Johnnie had been convicted of burglary more than three decades prior. Florida doesn’t allow people with certain types of felonies to receive aid. Since his conviction in 1983, Johnnie had turned his life around. The Sarasota City Commission called him a “prominent citizen” after his death. And Anthony had never committed a crime.
