Scott Dozier wants to be executed. After working for more than a year trying to ensure that it would happen, his execution is scheduled for tonight. Here’s what you need to know. 1/https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/01/18/the-volunteer?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …

Dozier has spent a decade on death row for the murder of Jeremiah Miller. During that time, he has come to accept his punishment. “I don’t want to die,” he said. “I just would rather be dead than do this.” 2/ https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/01/18/the-volunteer?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …pic.twitter.com/wH6JFCn5Mt

In the U.S., more than 1,400 men and women have been executed in the last four decades. Approximately one in 10 have abandoned appeals — they’re known as “volunteers.” 3/ https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/01/18/the-volunteer?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …pic.twitter.com/HyYfqz8ogy

Dozier is one of them. And few volunteers have set off as much legal and political upheaval as he has. 4/ https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/01/18/the-volunteer?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …pic.twitter.com/DgaekkzMlQ

When an incarcerated person volunteers for execution, it can force soul-searching by judges and lawyers, who wonder if their roles are akin to those of euthanasia doctors. Now thanks to Dozier, Nevada officials are experiencing this firsthand. 5/ https://www.themarshallproject.org/2018/01/18/the-volunteer?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …pic.twitter.com/YNlD3p4ryi

Tonight, Dozier is set to be executed with a lethal combination of fentanyl, the sedative midazolam, and the paralytic cisatracurium. The plan is controversial to say the least. Fentanyl has never before been used in an execution in the U.S. 6/https://www.themarshallproject.org/2017/08/30/nevada-plans-to-use-fentanyl-in-upcoming-execution?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …

Of the plan to use this experimental — and lethal — drug cocktail, one expert told TMP: “This is not actually science. It’s not actually medicine. It is a grotesque impersonation of those things.” 7/https://www.themarshallproject.org/2017/08/30/nevada-plans-to-use-fentanyl-in-upcoming-execution?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sprout&utm_source=twitter …

Fentanyl is also implicated in the opioid epidemic. “On top of that, it’s never been used in an execution before,” the Nevada ACLU's legal director told
@GuardianUS. “It’s extremely experimental. There is a very real risk of a botched execution.” 8/https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jul/10/nevada-fentanyl-execution-opioid-crisis-drug-death-row …1 reply 2 retweets 3 likesShow this thread -
However, Dozier recently told
@VICE/@VICEnews he’s not concerned about this experimental use of fentanyl: “You guys get pharmaceutical grade fentanyl and just bang me up man.” 9/https://news.vice.com/en_us/article/pawy58/scott-dozier-isnt-afraid-of-being-executed-with-fentanyl-just-bang-me-up-man …2 replies 0 retweets 2 likesShow this thread
Yesterday, the pharmaceutical company Alvogen filed a complaint in Nevada’s Clark County citing that their drug midazolam was illegally obtained for use in this execution.
TMP’s @MauriceChammah discussed Dozier and that case on @democracynow today. 10/https://www.democracynow.org/2018/7/11/nevada_plans_to_kill_condemned_prisoner …
