Buried in the shutdown news/Trump presser today is the fact that the GOP-led Senate is set to debate Syria policy on the floor next week, giving senators a chance to attempt to tie Trump’s hands on withdrawal and express their opposition to his moves

  5. Mueller's grand jury has been active for 18 months. They've heard testimony from Manafort (before his cooperation deal collapsed), a few people close to Roger Stone, a Ukrainian lawmaker, one of the Russians who attended the Trump Tower meeting, and more.

  6. HERE'S HOW IT WORKS: The grand jury was set to expire right about now. The judge granted an extension, and under federal rules, that extension can last up to six months. (But that doesn't automatically mean Mueller will work through June.) Full story:

So much to chew over in Trump’s Rose Garden speech, but I’m stuck on this: He claimed previous presidents have told him they wish they’d built a border wall. Really? Obama? Bush 43? Clinton? Bush 41? Carter? None has signaled in any way that he is pro-wall.

"Because he's running the Senate." -- Trump on why McConnell is not at the press event with him and GOP leaders. The Senate is out of session until Tuesday McConnell's aides say the GOP leader and Thune were unaware of press conference and had left before being told about it.

  10. To be entirely clear: We know that the Chief Judge Beryl Howell extended Mueller's grand jury, which was first seated in July 2017. And federal rules say that the grand jury term can be extended for six more months.

  12. One more. This "terrorists crossing the border" lie came up a lot while the migrant caravan was hearing to the US. Trump said there were Middle Easterners and terrorists in the group. US officials told CNN there were no signs that this was true. (h/t for the reminder)

  13. BIG MUELLER NEWS: The federal grand jury in DC that Mueller has been using was just extended for another six months, per my colleague . The original 18-month term was set to expire but the chief judge of the DC District Court has extended the grand jury's mandate.

  15. Finally: Not all terrorists come from abroad. Plenty are American citizens and get radicalized at home. (San Bernardino and Pulse Nightclub come to mind.) Then of course not all terrorists are inspired by jihad — remember Charleston church killer and the Nazi in Charlottesville.)

  19. Trump just repeated the widely debunked lie that lots of terrorists have entered through the US-Mexico border. It's totally wrong, and the administration hasn't ever proven it. (BTW: The most famous border incident with a terrorist happened at the Canadian border in 1999.)
