Well, I have sat through some dreadful election results in my time but nothing as bad as that.

(On that topic, my prediction for this year is that the issue which will dominate trade talks is “fish”. Economically not that important but an issue of principle for both sides. Hard to see a compromise that works).

    3) We enter a new phase in our history with a lack of enthusiasm but with a typically British “let’s make the best of it” approach. It’s difficult to know how this will play out when the government faces difficult decisions / trade-offs.

    2) Those people who are enthusiastic about Brexit don’t believe in “Global Britain”. They are motivated by the idea of British self-reliance and patriotism plus opposition to “the establishment”.

So, what did I learn? 1) We talk about a divided nation but the number of real enthusiasts for Brexit is pretty low. The effective slogan was “Get Brexit Done” not “Brexit is Great”.

Finally, the countdown and “God Save The Queen” (“it sounds mournful rather than joyous” said one of my non-British colleagues).

He then switched to attacking the establishment and how they had tried to stop Brexit. Turned into a wider attack on institutions contrasted to the great British people. Followed by cheers, lots of applause and chants of “Nigel, Nigel”.

He then pivoted to a “Global Britain” theme, taking about how without the EU, we would be able to trade with the rest of the world. No enthusiasm from the crowd; just polite applause.

I managed to walk out just as Farage appeared on stage and it was interesting to hear the crowd reaction. He started with stuff about how the EU had disrespected the UK and attacking Juncker, Barnier etc. This went down very well with the crowd.

On the crowd itself, the numbers were very small and, in general, not troublemakers but a group of people who were the Brexit true believers. Quite elderly and I saw quite a few mobility scooters. It didn’t seem that life had been kind to many of them.

A short thread on Parliament Square on night...due to a work event, I found myself nearby and thought I might as well experience Brexit in the company of Brexiters....

It’s an uncomfortable truth for but the UK leaving has strengthened other countries’ commitment to the EU. If we were looking at another country, more people would recognise as a mistake.

To everyone who voted for Brexit and accused us of scaremongering when we raised these concerns about real people's lives ..... I'm just going to leave this here. It didn't have to be like this. It speaks volumes about the Conservatives that it is.
