I am interested in the behaviour of invasive species. My focus lies on Polynesian rats on islands. I enjoy every moment in the field watching birds.

After hermit crabs have messed up our cheap cage traps we brought solid metal traps. Coconut crabs saw this as a challenge...impressive power.

Maybe Auckland and other cities can learn from that. I think it is a good step forward. Enforcement will be the key.

Ship rats did not make it to this motu. Some are left, but are limited to a few species. Kiore are abundant. I am looking forward to learning from the eradication and the change afterwards. Another wonderful day in the field.

Ground nesting birds are especially vulnerable to invasive predators. Not only NZ is suffering. In islands with rats in high population densities don't have many birds left. No time to wait for the last one to disappear.

Coconut crabs (Birgus latro) are quite impressive. Colorful, strong, huge. In small juveniles are found more often on the rat free motu . A successful rat eradication on the other motus might change that.
