Flags, Church Bells, even promotions in the Armed Forces. Is there no en to the honours showered upon these people? Maybe they ought to properly clear up this Epstein business first.

Your daily reminder that by pretending that locking more people up for longer is the key to criminal justice, and by ignoring the chronic delays and lack of resources for courts, police, CPS, legal aid, probation and prisons, the government is taking the public for fools.

Wonderful and well-deserved recognition for Nottingham Law School Legal Advice Centre's Callum Scott, who has won Paralegal of the Year at tonight's Modern Law Awards! Congratulations Callum!

's next scheduled is June 17 - for Romell Broom, who was already subjected by the State to a gruesome botched execution attempt in 2009. Double punishment for a man who has always claimed innocence? Stop before it's too late.

Today I had a little insight into the madness of our world. Yesterday I finished a 2-week trial defending a man charged with attempted murder. If convicted, he would have faced 15-20 years in prison. Last night, my wife showed me some photos from a lunch she had been to...(1)

Lawyers will be familiar with the examples of the delays and appalling case listings highlighted in this Monday Message. For non-lawyers, did you ever think that you were living in a country where the witnesses and victims in serious crimes were treated so badly?

The criminal justice system was cut to the bone when it wasn’t a headline winner. When no one was looking. Because who votes for a properly staffed probation service or an adequately funded prison system anyway?

If criminal lawyers actually had a "shocking influence" on policy, the system would work 100X better than it currently does. Why? Because we'd ALL insist on proper £££ for the CPS, defence, probation, court staff, buildings, victim support etc. The public deserve it.

Whether the changes would in fact breach article 7 ECHR or the common law rule against retrospective law is an open question I think - depends whether ‘automatic’ release matters in context of a sentence set at X years. Will revisit later this evening on this thread

At a minimum, any person running to be an elected DA or a judge must commit to allow full investigations for post-conviction claims of innocence & bail reform. This is the floor & not the ceiling. The next person wrongly arrested or convicted could be your family. Vote wisely!

Powerful speech from Faith Rowam, of , who says she’s been forced to quit legal aid criminal defence after 5 years due to low fees & ‘dangerous’ demands of job. ‘My dream since I was a little girl has been broken because the profession is not sustainable’.
